Once More Into the Breach?

To say the stock market enjoyed a positive start to the year would be a gross understatement. Equities as measured by the S&P 500[i] rallied 12%[ii] in the first quarter as investors put aside the structural concerns of the global economy and embraced risk wholeheartedly. Companies such as Sears Holdings, Netflix, and Bank of America that have struggled recently enjoyed powerful moves while defensive sectors such as utilities and telecom, the darlings of last year, were ignored.

Unintended Consequences

When it was all said and done, the S&P traversed a course that left it relatively unchanged for the year, though the path it followed was reminiscent of a drunken sailor. It was as if a number of conflicting forces conspired to buffet the capital markets back and forth confounding the prognosticators and policy makers alike only to end where it began which was a place few had forecasted. The quarter started on a relatively quiet note, but as it progressed a number of issues conspired to increase volatility and cause the major equity indexes to register one of the worst quarterly performances in recent memory.
